The Bears trio of quarterbacks last season combined for 17 passing touchdowns and 21 interceptions. The run game also struggled averaging just 3.1 yards per rushing attempt. On defense the Bears went from a top 5 unit to a bottom 5 in 2007 giving up an average of 354 yards per game. Oddsmakers have set the 2008 regular season win projected total for the Bears at 8 wins.

Schedule:

The Bears play in the NFC North and that brings two games against Green Bay, Minnesota and Detroit. The NFC North plays the AFC South and NFC South and that brings tough road games at Indy and Carolina. As a last place team in the NFC North last season they play the other two last place teams from the NFC and that means a road game at St Louis and Philadelphia at home.

Offense:

Before we get to the quarterbacks the Bears must improve on the ground and their 3.1 yards per rushing attempt last season. Drafted in the second round was Matt Forte who rushed for over 2100 yards last season at Tulane. Looks impressive but last year Conference USA defenses were simply not very good so those could be inflated yardage against weak competition. Adrian Peterson returns but only averaged 3.4 yards per attempt last season. Third stringer Garret Wolfe is only 5'7" and only got 31 carries last season for a mere 85 yards. Kevin Jones was acquired in the offseason but is coming off reconstructive knee surgery last season and begun training camp on the physically unable to perform list. There is a quarterback battle in training camp with Kyle Orton and Rex Grossman battling for the starting role. I believe Kyle Orton will get the starting job when it's all said and done. Devin Hester is the Bears key weapon at wide receiver and is the leading candidate at being the #1 guy for the Bears. There is some debate on this but Devin Hester needs to be on the field on offense for the Bears. Marty Booker comes over from Miami and Brandon Lloyd from Washington. The Bears lost Musin Mohammad and Bernard Berrian at wide receiver. Booker and Hester are solid but there is some question about depth behind both of them. Rookie Earl Bennett was taken in the third round out of Vanderbilt. Tight Ends Greg Olsen and Desmond Clark both contribute adequately to the passing game.

Defense:

This secondary was decimated by injuries last season and has every right to improve in 2008. The secondary was hit with injuries in 2007 to starters Mike Brown, Kevin Payne and Nathan Vasher. Both Vasher and Charles Tillman are a formable due at cornerback when healthy. Craig Steltz was drafted at safety out of LSU. The linebackers are strong with Urlacher, Lance Briggs and Hunter Hillenmeyer starting and depth behind them. Scouts Inc has Urlacher ranked the #2 linebacker in the league with Briggs at #6. Tommie Harris got a 4-year contract extension and he is hitting his prime. Dusty Dvoracek ruptured his ACL in the first game of the season and is eager to get back on the field. The key to the Bears on defense in 2008 is to stay healthy.

And now to my Selection:

I believe the Bears will improve on their defense this season but the offense has many question marks. If the Bears can't run they will struggle on offense. They are relying to heavily on second round pick Matt Forte to make an impact. Again he played in Conference USA and those defenses were very poor in college football last season. Whether it's Rex Grossman or Kyle Orton behind center neither will have much of a running game behind them and that means 2nd and 3rd and long situations.

Play the Chicago Bears under 8 wins for the 2008 season.

Selection: Play Chicago Bears under 8 wins in 2008 Regular Season.

Be sure to visit and bookmark my TV Show page at www.GamblersTelevision.com for continues pointspread coverage from the NFL.
