Veteran Franco wins first title since 2004

After five attempts, the sixth time was the charm for Franco Neto. The 40-year-old Brazilian became the oldest player to win a men's Swatch-FIVB World Tour gold medal as he and partner Pedro Cunha topped Mariano Baracetti and Martin Conde to win the $400,000 World Series 13 title here Sunday on the Plages du Prado. With his team's 21-9, 17-21, 15-7 win in 53 minutes, Franco at 40 years, eight months and 11 days bettered the mark set in November 1996 when American Mike Dodd (39 years, two months, seven days) won an FIVB title in Fortaleza, Brazil, with his 1996 Olympic silver-medal partner Mike Whitmarsh.
