Media literacy expert and Action Coalition for Media Education (ACME) President Bob McCannon was in Denver and Boulder recently for a series of workshops and presentations about media literacy and the importance of media independence.
McCannon talked about what's wrong with mainstream media when he cited the recent example of Britain's Got Talent entrant Susan Boyle's rise from obscurity to that of folk hero because of the amount of air time given her and her ilk of "news." The video doesn't do justice to McCannon's 8-hour presentation.
McCannon also talks about how the financial meltdown was handled - or not handled - since much of the information is very technical and not easily understandable. He advocates deconstructing the information and presenting it in ways that appeal to emotions and values and the short attention span that we have grown accustomed to watching.
McCannon says that the vast majority of adults don't have the ability to read and understand newspaper editorials. He says that educators need to pay less attention to the evils of media content and concentrate more on how to critically deconstruct content and be more engaging with students.
Six multinatural conglomerates control the majority of media in the United States and the world and as such, information is controlled and suppressed to the benefit of advertisers and the lowest common denominator of the population's literacy.
McCannon advocates that teachers, schools and the community be more critical by deconstructing media content and emphasizing the process by which media content is evalutated by viewers, listeners and readers.
